Vanity Project

The First REimagine Project:

My husband and I are currently going to school and we need an inexpensive place to live. So my dad and I had a talk and now we are working on remodeling the basement of my parents house so Nick and I can move in. Nick and a few of his friends are putting up all the walls, drywall, ceiling, etc themselves. So this is a pretty exciting project for a couple of beginner DIYers.

Here is my project, our bathroom vanity

We found this little gem at the Habitat for Humanity Restore near our home for $45 and also found a porcelain counter top for the same price. My plans are to stain it with a dark stain and attempt a distressed/worn look. We shall see how it goes.

UPDATE: 3/15/11

The sanding was a nightmare!!! Well not entirely though I did have this grand idea to hand sand the whole thing... well after about 15 minutes of pretty much getting nowhere, I decided to ask my husband for a hand sander (which I was terrified to use at first but soo glad I did) The hardest part was the trim. That gold detail was not coming off without a fight but I managed to remove most of it with the help of some thinner. I ended up using a dark Minwax stain, Jacobean, which is a bit darker than I wanted; the wood used to make this vanity is not the same throughout so some stained a bit lighter and others a bit darker, but I plan to detressed the stain before I seal it so that should help even the tone. I'll post pictures later today when I head over to my parents after class.
